2nd World Conference on Inter-Faith and Inter-Civilization PDF Print
Wednesday, 12 May 2010 18:44
From May 6 to 9, 2010, the Second World Conference was held in Ohrid on the theme: religion and culture - the unbreakable link between the nations.
Attending the Conference on behalf of the United Methodist Church were the following representatives: Bishop Heinrich Bolleter from Switzerland, Superintendent Wilfried Nausner from Austria, Head Supervising Pastor Mihail Cekov, Superintendent Bedros Altunijan of Bulgaria, Prof. Dr. Paul Mojsez from the USA, Prof. Dr. Michael Nausner from Germany, Prof. Dr. Robert Hunt from the USA, Superintendent Ana Palik-Kuncak from Serbia, lay preacher Colin Wright from England, Pastor Marjan Dimov, Pastor Mirce Tanchev, Petranka Buralieva, Pavlina Manavska and Mitko Konev. At the Conference the role of religion and culture as factors for peace and for the transformation of society was discussed.  Two panel discussions were held about the anniversaries of important personalities and events and about respecting differences and religious rights as a basis of peace and prosperity. In the end, considered and passed by the Conference was a final declaration in which it was specified among other things that the participants of this conference will seek open dialogue and cooperation for promoting and respecting human rights as the foundation for building peace and prosperity on national, regional and global levels. Compared to the First Conference where there was present the thought that dialogue between religions is difficult, at this Conference, we joyfully noted that diversity is a treasure and that each person should contribute to mutual respect and coexistence. It was stressed and thought that dialogue with God is most important, because a person who is not in dialogue with God does not know how to behave properly toward the rest of creation. The goal of this Conference was to reach a real dialogue between religions and culture, all with the aim of making fruitful a solution that will enable the resolution of conflicts and establishment of peace in the world. At the Conference the spirit of love prevailed, where all the speakers were of the view that only with love, which is the fruit of faith in God, is it possible to reach real mutual respect in dialogue between religions and establishment of real peace in the world. In particular it was emphasized that the populist slogans do not help anyone, but instead they create space for discord and hatred among nations. The conference was organized by the Ministry of Culture and the Commission for Relations with Religious Communities and Religious Groups. The conference was formally opened and closed by Ms. Elizabeth Kanceska - Milevska, Minister of Culture. The Third World Religious Conference will be held in Ohrid in 2013.

The role of religions and cultures in transformation of the society:
  8. Recognizing that all cultures and religions have distinctive qualities and traits, and flourish in different social environments, we must reduce the misperceptions of these differences and cultural gaps and promote mutual respect between communities and peoples.
  9. We emphasize the role and importance of inter-civilization and inter-religious dialogue in promoting human rights, particularly in strengthening the right to freedom of thought, conscience, religion and belief and in addressing global challenges such as those of peace, security, poverty, sustainable development, etc.

Anniversaries of significant persons and events:
  10. We respect the public display of religious symbols and celebration of religious events. These should not be seen or used as an attack on other religions nor a threat to social unity.

  13. Convinced that religious intolerance presents a serious barrier to the safety and security of all human beings, to the freedom of thought, expression and free access to information, as well as to the existence of free and pluralistic media, we emphasize the need to find and implement new ways to promote religious tolerance and recognize the valuable role that the media can play in this process.

    Therefore:
  14. We appreciate and thank the Macedonian people and the Macedonian Government for their hospitality and success in inter-religious co-existence.
  15. We are sending this message to all UN institutions appealing to their constant commitment in favour of inter-religious, inter-cultural and international dialogue, and act upon it through interagency cooperation.
